“Paper Airplane” for PGI

Monday, October 6th, 2008

In this whimsical web film that Nervo created for Premiere Global Services and their eMarketing division, Brian Merrell and I composited and animated together all of the illustrations and 3D renders based on the work of artist Betsy Walton. The main challenge was how to properly bring her paintings to life, without relying on a cliched stop-motion effect.

Early on, Brian and I spent a lot of time creating treatments in AfterEffects to match the aesthetics of the paintings, such as textured echo trails, ink and graphite smudges, color bleeds, etc. I also wrote and implemented a series of expressions to create the flowing movement for many of the abstract plant-like objects seen throughout the piece.

Design Firm: Nervo

Creative Director: Nando Costa
Illustrator: Betsy Walton
3D Artists: Thiago Costa, Jeff Norombaba, Joshua Cox

  1. I wonder if the creator of this animation watched that 1973 Roland Topor film.

  6. It’s original music done by Darrin Wiener, who does most of Nervo’s music and sound. I added the full credits above.
